Solana welcomes Helium to mainnet this week, marking a major milestone in Solana’s history. Helium is building out a 5G mobile network in addition to its already widespread LoRaWAN network powering Internet-of-Things devices. But unlike legacy telecommunications infrastructure providers, Helium’s buildout is entirely decentralized. By providing blockchain-based token incentives, Helium has empowered thousands of people all over the world to contribute to building a resilient, decentralized network that aims to outcompete legacy providers on cost and quality. Helium is truly a pioneer of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePINs).
While Helium began its life as its own blockchain, the technological demands of operating such a cutting edge network led the community to vote to move to Solana. Since Helium made that choice, some have begun the process of following suit (Render) while others have selected Solana from the very beginning (GenesysGo and Teleport, among others). Moving networks is no small feat and requires an incredible amount of groundbreaking engineering effort. However, the move was worth it, because DePIN is only possible on Solana.
